Giancarlo A. Mertz represents contractors, subcontractors, business owners and other construction personnel in a wide variety of construction projects. He researches complex legal issues, drafts memoranda and helps the Construction group analyze risk.
Before joining Cohen Seglias, Giancarlo gained experience in both judicial and legislative roles. He worked for the 4th Judicial District in the Chambers of the Hon. James E. Walsh. During his time there, he observed courtroom proceedings and drafted precise legal documents. He also served as a law clerk for the New York State Assembly, where he conducted legal and legislative research and assisted with bill drafting and floor debate preparation. In that capacity, he advised on issues before numerous standing committees.
Giancarlo earned his J.D. from Albany Law School, where he graduated magna cum laude. He was selected and served as Executive Editor for Coordinating and Operation of the Albany Law Review, worked as a Teaching Assistant for Evidence and was a winner of the Karen C. McGovern Senior Prize Trial Competition. He was also a finalist in the Domenick L. Gabrielli Appellate Advocacy Competition, where he received the award for “Best Brief.”
